This year’s Fall MACA Conference will address Spanish language and the Hispanic culture in ACO work, the care and handling of captive birds and updates on changes to the Minnesota Dangerous Dog Law.

Spanish language and the Hispanic culture in ACO work

Julie Manrique, Program Director, Leverage Through Language

Julie Manrique has 18 years of teaching experience and holds a Master of Education in Second Language and Culture Education.  She has lived and traveled extensively in Spanish-speaking countries including Colombia and Mexico where she taught English as a second language.  After teaching Spanish for 12 years in public schools, Julie became Director of Leverage Through Language where she coordinates and teaches Spanish language and culture classes for police departments, social services, health care, and corporate settings.  Julie has worked extensively with the Minneapolis Police Department in teaching Spanish Language and Culture courses, participating in citizens’ academies in Spanish, and other events promoting cross-cultural understanding.

 

Captive birds in your work environment

Karen Anderson, Owner, Certified Avian Specialist, Avian Suites

Karen Anderson has been working with companion birds for 15 years.  Her company, Avian Suites, is a specialized boarding facility for companion parrots.  Avian Suites is also a co-founder of Minnesota-based Avian Behavior Council which has sponsored four Avian Behavior Conferences which offer courses in the care and training of parrots.  Karen is an Avian Health Technician and a Certified Avian Specialist.

 

Changes to the Minnesota Dangerous Dog Law

Bill Forbes, Animal Control Officer, Bloomington Animal Control

The Minnesota Legislature passed, and the Governor signed into law, significant changes to the Minnesota Dangerous Dog Law (347.50-347.565). These changes  took effect on August 1, 2008. The most significant changes are: repeat violators of certain statutes may be prohibited from owning dogs; "Provocation" is defined; insurance requirements for dangerous dogs increased.  These changes will be discussed.

The cost of the school includes continental breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack.

The conference will be held at the Hampton Inn North, 1000 Gramsie Road, Shoreview, MN, 651-482-0402.  Hotel accommodations are the responsibility of the individual registrant.
